Science: Systems in Nature

Life Processes
SCI.2.4        The student will understand life processes of plants and animals through inquiry.  (SOL 2.4)

SCI.2.4.1     Explain the life cycle of various animals.
·            Animals go through a series of orderly changes for their life cycle.
·            Diagram life cycles of a butterfly and a white-tailed deer.

SCI.2.4.2     Explain the life cycle of various plants.
·            Plants go through a series of orderly changes for their life cycle.
·            Diagram the life cycle of a flowering plant.

Living Systems
SCI.2.5        The student will understand relationships among organisms in living systems through inquiry. (SOL 2.5)

SCI.2.5.1     Describe the interdependent components of an animal’s habitat.
·            Describe the basic components of an animal’s habitat (food, water, shelter or cover, and space).
·            Classify the parts of a habitat as living or nonliving.
SCI.2.5.2     Describe how living and nonliving components of a habitat are influenced by humans and nature.
·            Describe the impact of seasonal changes on plants and animals (e.g., how trees change through the seasons and how animals respond to seasonal changes).
Plant and Animal Responses
Definition
Examples
migration
long distance movement, due to seasonal change
salmon, geese, monarch butterflies
hibernation
long, deep sleep, due to winter or harsh conditions
groundhog, black bear, bats
dormancy
growth and activity are temporarily stopped, due to harsh conditions
skunks, many trees
camouflage
body coloring that makes it blend in with the environment
squirrel, dolphin, Arctic fox

·            Explain the usefulness of camouflage in an animal’s habitat (e.g., coloration patterns of frogs).
·            Describe how animals are dependent on their surroundings. For example, squirrels and other animals are affected by the loss of forest habitat.

SCI.2.5.3     Describe why scientists study fossils.
·            Fossils found provide scientists with information about plants and animals that lived long ago. For example, fossil clams may indicate an area was once under water.

Earth Resources
SCI.2.6        The student will understand the purpose of plants through inquiry. (SOL 2.7, SOL 2.8)

SCI.2.6.1     Identify and classify the sources and uses of plant products.
·            Plants produce oxygen and food used by other living things.
·            Animals use plants or plant parts as shelters.
·            Describe plant products that people use.
Plant Sources
wood
fruits/vegetables
other
Plant Products
lumber,
rubber (rubber tree)
apples,
soybeans
cotton (flower),
peanuts,
medicines (various plant parts)

SCI.2.6.2     Describe how plants reduce soil erosion.
·         Erosion is the movement of broken down earth from one location to another.
·         Water, wind, and other weather phenomena can cause erosion to occur quickly or over time.

·         Land surfaces covered or protected by plants are less likely to losse soil to erosion.
